Why Should You Buy Atta Chakki For Home?

Do you know that the atta(flour) milled at home with the help of a domestic flour mill has not only monetary benefits but, more importantly, health benefits?

Later in this article, I will share a quick briefing on the advantages of home atta chakki but before that, let me give you some strong reasons why a domestic flour mill is essential for your home.

As you have searched this question, I believe you don’t have atta chakki at home.

I assume you are using packaged atta or going to a local flour mill every month to get your wheat milled.

The frequency of getting milled atta(flour) from local flour mills can vary according to family size and consumption.

Is It Worth Buying Domestic Atta Chakki?

The cost of getting 1 kg of good quality readymade atta is higher than the atta you made with your domestic atta chakki.

I am not considering any premium atta or multi-grain atta here in the calculation, which will cost you almost double the cost you will get from home atta chakki.

For calculations, let us take an example of a small united family, like 4 adults and two kids. You can also consider the size of your family at actual.

Monthly consumption 20kg for 4 adult + 2 Children

Scenario 1: You are outsourcing atta or buying packaged atta

The packaged atta cost is between 34 to 40 rupees/kg ( brands considered- Asirwad, Fortune & Pillsbury)

So you will spend 35*20= 700 rupees ( I have considered the average cost of 35 rupees/kg of atta in case you buy at least 10kg packet)

Monthly expense = 700 Rupees

Yearly Expense = 8400 Rupees

Scenario 2: You go to the nearest local flour mill and get your atta milled

In that case, I believe that you store the wheat for a year or buy 50kg whole wheat every two months.

Now, let me give you the calculation of the cost of 1kg atta when you get it milled from a local flour mill.

The average cost of milling 1kg atta at any local flour mill is around 4rupees/kg.

So you will spend 20*4=80 rupees to get your chakki atta.

The biggest drawback here is you won’t get the exact 20kg atta back due to losses in the process. So practically you will get 19 kg only.

And, If I consider the cost of transportation, like going to the local atta chakki carrying the wheat with you in your vehicle, it will cost you some money, for example, petrol.

Your time for waiting. It will not always be convenient; for example, this task is a bit irritating in the monsoon.

So, if I consider all factors, like,

  • The good quality wheat cost 1kg = 32 rupees/kg
  • Milling cost of 1kg wheat t a local flour mill = 4 rupees/kg
  • Transportation(petrol/diesel) cost to and fro= 40 rupees minimum

The overall cost of getting 1 kg atta will be 32+4+2 = 37 rupees

Monthly expense = 38*20 = 760 rupees

Yearly expense = 12*760 = 9120 rupees

Drawback: You will never get 100% atta of your own wheat because the local flour mill owners do not clean the chakki after every milling.

You will always get mixed atta that is already inside the chakki from the previous process. Assume that you will get 10% of different quality atta every time.

Scenario 3: You have atta chakki or a domestic flour mill at home. You are not going anywhere to get your fresh and healthy atta

The output of any good branded domestic atta chakki is approximately 8 to 14kg/hour.

And the average power consumption is around 0.75 units/hour. ( Most atta chakkis are having 1 hp motor)

So, to get 20 kg of atta, you have to run the atta chakki for approximately 2.5 hours.

The cost of 1 unit is around 5 rupees in metro cities.

One hour operating cost will be 0.75 units per hour*2.5(hours) =1.875 units

1.875 units*5 rupees(cost of electricity) = 9.375 rupees for 20 kg atta.

So if I divide 9.375 by 20 kg, the average milling cost of 1 kg atta will be around 0.47 rupees.

Now, if I consider the best quality wheat cost for 1 kg = 34 rupees

The final atta cost will be 34+0.47 = 34.47 rupees.

Monthly cost: 20*34.47 = 689.40 rupees

Yearly cost: 12*689.40 rupees = 8272 rupees

Drawback: your one-time investment for a good atta chakki or domestic flour mill is around 14k to 16k rupees.

Comparison Of All Three Scenarios Based On Cost

  • The yearly cost of scenario 1 – Readymade packaged atta – 8400 rupees
  • The yearly cost of scenario 2 – locally milled atta – 9120 rupees
  • The yearly cost of homemade fresh chakki atta – home atta chakki – 8272 rupees

There is a slight difference between scenarios 1 & 3. The readymade atta and home chakki atta.

The second scenario of getting your wheat milled at a local flour mill will cost you relatively higher than the 1st and 2nd scenarios.

So logically, you will continue with readymade packaged atta.

But wait, your decision not to buy domestic atta chakki is purely based on the cost. There is a more important thing that you are missing here.

The healthy atta.

Comparison Of All Three Scenarios Based On Pure & Healthy Atta

You don’t have any control over the ready-made atta. You will never know what quality grains have been used to prepare the atta.

Your buying decision of any packaged atta is mostly based on the influence of advertisements.

When you see any advertisement for ready-made atta, you start believing that this is the best atta, but in reality, it is processed atta and almost loses the vital vitamins, fibers & carbohydrates during the commercial milling process.

I am not saying that ready-made atta is unhealthy or lost 100% nutritious value but compared to the other two scenarios, ready-made atta is a bad choice in the long run.

The research concludes that ready-made atta has comparatively less nutritious than homemade or locally milled atta.

At first instance, readymade atta might look cost-effective, but indirectly you are not getting the nutritious flour for your family.

Moreover, the readymade atta has some pre-mixed ingredients like salt and refined flour, which is not healthy as the other two scenarios.

Further, many preservatives have been added to the ready-made atta to keep it fresh for a longer time.

Most importantly, ready-made atta is prepared without the brans, reducing the overall nutritious value of the atta that you are getting in your home atta chakki or locally milled flour.

If you are not so conscious about natural and nutritious flour, you can continue with ready-made flour that is available in the market.

But if you care about the health of your family and yours, you should not buy ready-made flour.

Now, if I talk about the locally milled atta, it is more nutritious and healthy than ready-made or packaged atta because it has excellent taste, and you will get almost 90% of the flour from your own selected wheat grains.

Stone grinders are the healthiest method to get atta, and most local flour mills are stone mills.

There are some wheel cutter-based grinders also, but they are better than the commercial and large-scale processed atta called ready made atta.

And, If you are looking for 100% authentic and pure atta, home atta chakki is the best and most affordable option for you.

You will get what you feed into the atta chakki or domestic flour mill.

No preservatives, top quality fresh atta with a maximum percentage of nutritious like vitamins, fibers, minerals, and carbohydrates compared to the other two methods.

If you can afford the one-time cost of atta chakki, you will get the lifelong benefits of pure and healthy homemade flour.

Now, you might question what will be the return on your investment, If you buy atta chakki for your home?

If I consider healthy and authentic atta, there is no comparison, but for cost analysis, here is an example of the ROI of domestic atta chakki.

Return On Investment Of Home Atta Chakki ( ROI of domestic flour mill)

A good quality atta chakki will cost you 15000 to 20000 on average. So if I consider the 16500 rupees for buying a good quality atta chakki, here is the calculation of return on investment.

Yearly Expense for ready-made atta – 8400 rupees

Yearly Expense for locally milled atta – 9120 rupees

Yearly Expense with home atta chakki – 8272 rupees

So mathematically, you feel there is a long time for ROI, but ideally, you will get many benefits for having homemade fresh chakki atta.
